Though it's not new, genre-hopping is definitely a hot trend among today's Popstars. While some Pop Artists (Pink, Madonna) make shifts within the same genre from CD to CD, other Artists change genres completely, with mixed results. Here are ten genre-hopping Pop Artists:

1. Alanis Morrissette - Though it's hard to believe now, Alanis began her career as a Dance/Pop Artist in her native Canada and scored Top Ten Dance Hits. Then in 1995, she went Pop/Rock and released her mainstream breakthrough "Jagged Little Pill" and the rest is history. Alanis is currently on tour celebrating "Jagged Pill's" 10th Anniversary and her new "Jagged Little Pill - Acoustic" CD. And she's throwing a nod to her Dance Music past in that concert by playing an Acoustic version of her Canadian Top Ten Dance Hit "Too Hot" during the Encore!

2. Sheena Easton - Sheena Easton began her career as a Pop Artist with such hits as "Morning Train (9 to 5)" and "For Your Eyes Only". She flirted with R&B and Funk on her later collaborations with Prince. And in the late Eighties/Early Nineties she released 2 back to back Dance/Pop CDs "The Lover in Me" and "What Comes Naturally". She followed with 2 CDs of Classic Jazz and Pop. And in the 00s, Sheena embraced yet another sub-genre by releasing a CD of Disco covers called "Fabulous".

3. CHER - What genre HASN'T Cher done? She started her solo career in the early 70s as a Pop Star with a string of #1 Hits. By 1979, Cher was a Disco Artist and had a hit with "Take Me Home". In the early Eighties, Cher went Rock on her release "Black Rose" and a duet with Meat Loaf. Then in the mid-Eighties to early Nineties, Cher released a string of top selling Pop Rock CDs that spawned such hits as "If I Could Turn Back Time", "Love & Understanding", and "Just Like Jesse James". By the mid-nineties Cher was ready for a change. She released "It's a Man's, Man's, Man's World" on which she covered hits by her favorite Male Rockers. That CD's biggest hit was the Dance Version of "One by One". So Cher switched genres once again and released the Dance CDs "Believe" and "Living Proof". What's next for Cher? No one knows for sure but the Internet is buzzing with rumors that Cher will return to the Rock Music genre once again on her next project.

4. Madonna - Madonna launched her career in 1982 with her Dance/Pop Hit "Holiday" and defined the "Dance Music" sound for the Eighties. Although she continued to score hits in the Dance Clubs, her subsequent CDs veered much more towards Pop. By the late Eighties and Early Nineties, Madonna had created a Pop sub-genre all her own on such "Erotic Pop" releases as "Justify My Love" and "Erotica". Her next CD "Bedtime Stories" was a collection of multi-genre tracks from Dance to Pop/Rock to Electronica. And on her latest releases Madonna has embraced Electronica and even experimented with genre melding, particularly Acoustic Rock and Electronica on several tracks on "Music" and "American Life". Madonna's New CD "Defying Gravity" is described by her management as an "all Dance" CD.

5. Amber - though not as well known to mainstream audiences as some of the other Artists mentioned, Amber is a bonafide Superstar in America's Dance Clubs. And like Kylie Minogue, Madonna and Cher, she is an Icon in the Gay Community. She's had 7 #1 Dance Chart Hits in America (so Far) (Including "If You Could Read My Mind', "This is Your Night" and Sexual (Li Da Di)") and many other Top Tens. But on her new CD "My Kind of World", Amber made a career left turn and released a multi-genre Disc of tracks that range from Alt Rock Infused Electronica to Pop/Rock, Dance, and even Jazz. The first Single "You Move Me" was a melding of Alt Rock (think Evanesence) with Electronica. Though a departure for the Artist, the Maxi Single version was a top ten hit on America's Billboard Club Chart. Amber's latest Single release, the dark and atmospheric "Voodoo", is climbing the Billboard chart with a Bullet! And with at least two other Commercial Pop/Rock Singles in the pipeline ( "Just Like That" (Billboard's pick as My Kind of World's secret weapon) and fan favorite "Sacrificial Lamb") to consolidate her success, it's likely that Amber will continue to record music that crosses genres for some time to come.6. Pink - Pink launched her career with a successful Urban-influenced Dance/Pop CD. For her next release, she took creative control, worked with Linda Perry, and released the Pop/Rock CD "Mizunderstood". She followed that breakthrough with the CD "Try This" that featured a subtle genre change to Punk/Pop.

7. Jennifer Lopez - Lopez went #1 out of the gate with the Latin Dance/Pop track "If You Had My Love". Her followup "Waiting for Tonight" was a monster smash in Dance Clubs the World over and subsequent releases were meldings of Latin, Urban, Rap, and Dance music. On her new CD "Rebirth" there is a definite "old skool" Funk vibe.

8. Pat Benatar - Pat Benatar was the #1 Female Rocker of the Eighties. She launched her career in 1979 with her Rock Music Single "Heartbreaker". As musical styles changed in the early Eighties, Benatar's CDs moved increasingly towards Synthesizer Rock and away from Guitar Driven Rock. She reportedly clashed with her label bosses over her "Rock Chick" image and fought to soften her sound to better represent who she was. The result was her first Pop/Rock CD "Tropico". In 1991, Pat switched genres and released the Blues Rock CD "True Love". By the late nineties though, she was back to recording Rock Music and although she flirted with Acoustic Rock on "Innamorato", her last CD "Go" was a straight ahead Classic Rock set. Pat's latest release is "Pat Benatar's Greatest Hits".

9. Anastacia - Anastacia first came to prominence in America with her Dance Hit "I'm Outta Love". Though the CD was not strictly "Dance", the label stuck and it's proven hard for the Artist to shake. Her followup CD veered into Macy Gray territory on the track "Freak of Nature", Dance on "One Day in Your Life" and Rock on the ballad "Overdue Goodbye". Her latest CD "Anastacia", which will finally get released Stateside in August, is a categorized by the Artist as "Sprock" - a fusion of Soul, Pop, and Rock.

10. Christina Aguilera - Christina has only released 2 studio CDs in her career but already she's joined the "genre-hopping" club. While her debut was a straight ahead Dance/Pop CD, her follow up "Stripped" was anything but. "Stripped" featured songs from practically every genre: Dance, Urban/Hip Hop, Pop, Rock, even Country/Rock. The first Single "Dirty" is an Urban influenced Dance track, the follow-up "Beautiful", a gorgeous Pop/Rock Ballad. "Fighter" is a Pat Benatar-esque Mid Tempo Rock song. And then there's the R&B-influenced "Impossible" (with Alicia Keys) and the Country Rock tinged "Cruz". Aguilera is said to be toning down her image for her next CD. Towards that end, she has commissioned English Popstar Dido (who previously wrote "I'm a Girl, Not Yet a Woman for Britney Spears) to write a track for her.
